In English

This stage has two parts: gifts for the father and gifts for the mother. The first, 'matekenyandebvu,' thanks the father for raising his daughter, recalling the playful moments of pulling at his beard as a child on his knee. The second is paid to the mother alone; some of these gifts are called 'mbereko,' representing the sling she used to carry the child on her back, and 'mafukidzadumbu,' recalling the time she carried the child in her womb. The payment to the father can be negotiated, but the payment to the mother is fixed and not open to negotiation.
