In English
This stage, which follows Rusambo, concerns the cattle payment, though most of it is now paid in cash equivalent to the value of the cattle. This usually amounts to around seven or eight cows, the most significant of which is the 'mombe yeumai,' a live cow that must be given to the bride's mother. This cow is expected to bear a calf as a sign that the marriage has been blessed, since in Shona belief the maternal ancestral spirits hold particularly strong influence over a family's wellbeing. Once the calf has been weaned, the mombe yeumai may be slaughtered and shared between both families as an act of thanksgiving.
