Moyo Wadyegora

Moyo · Heart

Moyo Wadyegora is a Shona clan of the Moyo totem, the heart, a totem taken from part of an animal rather than a whole one. Its men are greeted as Wadyegora and Chirandu, and the detembo also calls them Mukonde and the child of Rusike; its women are greeted as MaMoyo or Vapamoyo.

The Wadyegora detembo is a roll call of the clan's people and resting places. It calls the clan Moyo, the child of Rusike and those of Rusike's house (mwana waRusike, vokwaRusike), and greets it at Dombotombo, Mazave and Mandoga, and among those who rest (varere) at Mahwemachena, Matumbaarira and Binda. It names the people of Muzarabani and greets them at Shangura, Chikombore and Dudzu.

Beside Wadyegora the poem uses Chirandu, a name many Moyo clans share, and Mukonde. It thanks the vaHombarume, the hunters, at Nhumbe, and it closes with thanks to the children of Muzarabani (vana vaMuzarabani).

Those who carry a totem do not eat its animal. Some families keep away from one part of it only, such as the heart, and the old belief holds that a person who breaks the rule loses their teeth.

The praise names are for every day, not only for ceremonies: a person is greeted by them, thanked with them, and a wife praises her husband with his.

In Goromonzi, though families carrying it live all over Zimbabwe and beyond.

Can two people of the Moyo totem marry?

Traditionally, people of the same mutupo and chidawo do not marry: they are counted as one family. Between different Moyo clans some families allow it, often after a ceremony that cuts the kinship (kucheka ukama).
