Moyo Mushoriwa

Moyo · Heart

Moyo Mushoriwa is one of the Shona clans that keep the heart, Moyo, as their totem. Its men are greeted as Mushoriwa and Gono remombe, and the detembo adds Chidonhamukaka, Chidonhamuto and VaRisingagohwe; its women are greeted as MaMoyo or Vapamoyo. The poem praises the clan as those who eat all of the meat.

The Mushoriwa detembo greets the clan as Gono remombe, the bull of the herd, and Chiera Moyo, the one that keeps Moyo as its totem. It says the whole of the meat is eaten and adds a saying of its own, 'Warida ndiye waribika', whoever wants it is the one who cooks it. It calls the clan Chidonhamukaka and Chidonhamuto, names that turn on milk and on gravy.

Its places are a hill of white stones, Njaira, Mabvazuva (the east) and Urambe Guvira, which it describes as a hill where neither grass nor trees grow. It also praises the clan as those who drink the rain that falls in the dry season without thunder, and names the tree that comes into leaf in the dry season.

Those who carry a totem do not eat its animal. Some families keep away from one part of it only, such as the heart, and the old belief holds that a person who breaks the rule loses their teeth.

The praise names are for every day, not only for ceremonies: a person is greeted by them, thanked with them, and a wife praises her husband with his.

What are the Moyo Mushoriwa praise names?

Men are greeted as Mushoriwa, and the detembo also calls the clan Gono remombe, Chiera Moyo, VaRisingagohwe, Chidonhamukaka and Chidonhamuto. Women are greeted as MaMoyo or Vapamoyo.

What does 'Warida ndiye waribika' mean?

Whoever wants it is the one who cooks it. The Mushoriwa detembo says it straight after praising the clan as those who eat all of the meat.

What is Urambe Guvira in the Mushoriwa detembo?

A hill the detembo greets the clan at, which it describes as a hill where neither grass nor trees grow. The poem also greets the clan at a hill of white stones.

Can two people of the Moyo totem marry?

Traditionally, people of the same mutupo and chidawo do not marry: they are counted as one family. Between different Moyo clans some families allow it, often after a ceremony that cuts the kinship (kucheka ukama).
