Babamukuru is your father's elder brother, counted in Shona families as a senior father.

Babamukuru is the elder brother of your father, and the husband of your mother's elder sister is called the same. He is regarded as a father in his own right. In nhaka (inheritance) an elder brother seldom took over his late younger brother's widow, because he was already counted as a father to that household, so the duty passed to the younger brothers instead. A Dada Nerurimi story shows the other side of the same duty: after a man dies, the family council places his widow and children in the care of his elder brother, and the story calls him Babamukuru.

Among brothers the eldest carries the family's spiritual authority. In a published account of kurova guva, the eldest surviving brother of the dead man led the procession to the grave, prayed aloud to the ancestors and was served beer first, and he stayed the spiritual head of the family whatever his health; a younger brother who needed his ancestors had to ask him to pray. A Shona dictionary adds that the name is also used for a tete's husband and for the husband of an older sister, and that a younger brother and his family call an elder brother who has his own family babamukuru.

Why is babamukuru called father?

Shona custom counts a father's brothers as fathers. An elder brother was regarded as a father to his younger brother's household, which is why he seldom inherited a younger brother's widow.
