Ambuya means grandmother in Shona, the mother of either parent, and the grandmother was traditionally the family's teller of folk tales.

Ambuya is your grandmother, your father's mother or your mother's mother. In the evening storytelling of the past, children of a neighbourhood gathered at the home of the sarungano, the teller of ngano (folk tales), and that teller was usually a grandmother: someone at ease with children and full of stories she could stretch and embellish. The O-Level study pack's poem notes paint the same scene of grandmothers surrounded by grandchildren in the evening, telling them ngano.

The word covers more than one woman. A Shona dictionary also gives it for a grandparent's sisters, for the wife of your sekuru (your mother's brother), and as a polite way to address any elderly woman. Ambuya is also what a son-in-law calls his wife's mother, which is why the kinship tables list the word twice. A grandmother calls the child muzukuru, and the two share the chizukuru register, where teasing and plain advice are allowed; a Dada Nerurimi example has a grandchild joking with an ambuya about how much water she drinks these days.

Is ambuya the same as mbuya?

Yes. Both forms are used for a grandmother in Shona writing, for example 'Ambuya vakachengeta muzukuru wavo' and 'Ivo mbuya ngavatidzidzise zvose zveupenyu'.
