The detembo greets the clan as Murehwa and Matarira, Marovahombe and Mukanya, and calls it mwana webveni, the child of the baboon, and Chirongo, the clay pot. It names the clan the child of Pfumojena, the white spear, and of Chinamhora, and remembers Tingini, who came from Mahumwi, along with Gurusvusvu, Gurumwandira, Nzvere and Kanorimona. It greets the clan at Kakoromokwa, Mandiya and Kaporomondo.

Much of the poem is fond teasing. It calls the clan Chitambaneruwere, the one who plays on the bare rock, likens its walk and its run to planting nyimo and groundnuts, and says it lives by taking (vanorarama nezvokuba). It speaks of bald heads that shine like lightning and of a clan that climbs a cliff with its teeth (anokwira rupara nemeno), and closes on Mugagami.

Those who carry a totem do not eat its animal. Some families keep away from one part of it only, such as the heart, and the old belief holds that a person who breaks the rule loses their teeth.

The praise names are for every day, not only for ceremonies: a person is greeted by them, thanked with them, and a wife praises her husband with his.

Mibvunzo.

Is Murehwa a Soko praise name?

Yes. A study note on totems lists Murehwa among the Soko praise names, each of which marks a sub-clan, and the detembo greets this clan as Murehwa in its second line.

What does mwana webveni mean?

The child of the baboon. The Soko Murehwa detembo gives the clan that name twice, beside Marovahombe and beside Makumbe.

Who is Tingini in the Soko Murehwa detembo?

The poem calls the clan the child of Tingini and says Tingini came from Mahumwi. It says nothing more of Tingini, and no other source here does.

Where is Soko Murehwa commonly found?

In Goromonzi, Murehwa and Shamva, though families carrying it live all over Zimbabwe and beyond.

Can two people of the Soko totem marry?

Traditionally, people of the same mutupo and chidawo do not marry: they are counted as one family. Between different Soko clans some families allow it, often after a ceremony that cuts the kinship (kucheka ukama).
