Soko Kumene

Soko · Monkey

Soko Kumene is a Shona clan of the Soko totem, the monkey, which its detembo praises as Makwiramiti, the climber of trees. The clan is thanked as Kumene; its men are greeted as Soko, and its women as Soko, Mwenewazvo or MaNcube. Its detembo names the clan Matarira, the child of Mutinhima.

The Kumene detembo opens with the monkey itself, Soko Makwiramiti, the one who climbs trees, and later calls it Mahomuhomu. It names the clan's people as those of Masawi and Nyamhuno, of Mvurachena and Nhengoyepwa, of Mutiwawa and Chikanga and of Chinamavi, and counts Deredzo, at Mhedza, among its own.

Its closing lines tell the clan that wherever they are called, the land is theirs (nyika ndeyenyu Chiwere), and name them Matarira, the child of Mutinhima, and Dzivaremvura, the pool of water.

Those who carry a totem do not eat its animal. Some families keep away from one part of it only, such as the heart, and the old belief holds that a person who breaks the rule loses their teeth.

The praise names are for every day, not only for ceremonies: a person is greeted by them, thanked with them, and a wife praises her husband with his.

The monkey. Soko, also written shoko, is listed among the animal totems by both the Wikipedia article on the Shona and a study note on totems.

How is Soko Kumene different from other Soko clans?

Soko has several praise names, and each one marks a sub-clan. Kumene is the praise name of this one, and its detembo names its own people: Masawi, Nyamhuno and the child of Mutinhima.

What are the Soko Kumene praise names?

Men are greeted as Soko, and women as Soko, Mwenewazvo or MaNcube. The detembo also calls the clan Kumene, Makwiramiti, Mahomuhomu, Matarira and Dzivaremvura.

Where is Soko Kumene commonly found?

In Marondera, though families carrying it live all over Zimbabwe and beyond.

Can two people of the Soko totem marry?

Traditionally, people of the same mutupo and chidawo do not marry: they are counted as one family. Between different Soko clans some families allow it, often after a ceremony that cuts the kinship (kucheka ukama).
