Soko Moyondizvo

Soko · Monkey

Soko Moyondizvo is a Shona clan of the Soko totem, the monkey. Its men are greeted as Soko, and the detembo also calls the clan Mujena, Vhudzijena, Mukanya, Matarira and vaMoyo. Its women are greeted as MaNcube, Mwenewazvo or Soko.

The detembo greets the clan as Mujena, vaMoyo and Vhudzijena, the white-haired, and as Mukonde, Matarira, Chibatebate and Mukanya. It calls it mwana webveni, the child of the baboon, and Mberekamacheche, the one who carries the little ones on its back. It says the clan came from Nembire's (vakabva kwaNembire), greets it at Mhakwe, Mutemwa, Makomo, Mayegoti, Dendenyore, Matsvitsi and Machiri, and calls it the people who fill Hwedza (vazere Hwedza).

Then the poem teases. It pictures the monkey moving through the branches (Mushonganematavi), nimble in the trees, and says the clan fears to farm and eats what it takes (vakatya kurima, vanodya zvokuba), carrying off food from its owners. It closes on Muombandaguta and on the clan as eaters of mhani (vadyi vemhani).

Those who carry a totem do not eat its animal. Some families keep away from one part of it only, such as the heart, and the old belief holds that a person who breaks the rule loses their teeth.

The praise names are for every day, not only for ceremonies: a person is greeted by them, thanked with them, and a wife praises her husband with his.

Mibvunzo.

Is Soko Moyondizvo the same clan as Moyo Moyondizvo?

No. The Mitupo collection prints Soko Moyondizvo among the monkey clans and Moyo Moyondizvo, a heart totem, as a separate clan with its own poem. The Soko poem does greet its clan as vaMoyo.

What does Vhudzijena mean in the Soko Moyondizvo detembo?

Vhudzi is hair and jena is white, so Vhudzijena is the white-haired one. The detembo greets the clan by it beside Mujena, and a study note on totems lists it, spelt Bvudzijena, among the Soko praise names that each mark a sub-clan.

Where is Soko Moyondizvo commonly found?

In Marondera and Hwedza, though families carrying it live all over Zimbabwe and beyond.

Can two people of the Soko totem marry?

Traditionally, people of the same mutupo and chidawo do not marry: they are counted as one family. Between different Soko clans some families allow it, often after a ceremony that cuts the kinship (kucheka ukama).
