Tezvara, usually said as vatezvara out of respect, is the father of your wife or husband.

Tezvara is your spouse's father: a man's wife's father and a woman's husband's father, and a Shona dictionary adds that a man also calls his wife's brother tezvara. The relationship is one of the most formal in Shona life. The Yeukai notes list fathers-in-law with their daughters-in-law, and sons-in-law with their fathers-in-law, among the relatives who must speak to each other with restraint.

Much of the relationship is set during roora. A suitor approaches his wife's family through a go-between (munyai), who presents a plate and pays a small fee, vhuramuromo ('opening the mouth'), so that the in-laws will state their terms, and the father receives matekenyandebvu in thanks for raising his daughter. Once negotiations began, custom required the son-in-law to sweep the ashes at his in-laws' dare, and afterwards to help them in good times and bad and never to visit empty-handed.
