Muroora is a son's wife, the daughter-in-law, who in Shona custom marries into her husband's whole family.

Muroora is the name a married woman carries in the family she has married into: her husband's parents, brothers and sisters all call her muroora, and the whole family counts her as theirs. Her husband's grandparents treat her as a grandchild, and his brothers and sisters treat her as maiguru or mainini. Her chief duty is to bind her own family and her husband's together, and to honour the new family by bearing children.

She speaks to her husband's parents, her vatezvara and vamwene, in the respectful register. At family gatherings her husband's siblings may tease her in public, a custom called chiroora that she is expected to take in good humour. At kurova guva the varoora sweep the grave, kneel before it and receive the first calabashes of beer, and the muzukuru places money on the leading muroora's head in thanks; daughters-in-law are also among those who wash the body of the dead.

Muroora means daughter-in-law, a son's wife. Her husband's whole family calls her muroora.

What is chiroora?

It is the custom by which a husband's brothers and sisters may tease a daughter-in-law in public at family gatherings. It carries no ill will, and she is expected to take it in good humour.
