Sekuru is also the Shona term for your mother's brother, the maternal uncle, who calls his sister's children vazukuru.

Your mother's brothers are called sekuru, the same word as for a grandfather, and a Shona dictionary extends the term to that uncle's son and calls his wife ambuya. He calls his sister's children vazukuru. The kinship tables note that the maternal uncle holds an important ceremonial role, especially in marriage negotiations.

The tie is clearest from the nephew's side. At Shona rituals it is usually a muzukuru, a son of the dead man's sister, who acts as master of ceremonies: at kurova guva the muzukuru poured beer strainings on the grave and helped slaughter the goat, and a sister's son joined the dead man's brothers and sons on the journey to a diviner to learn the cause of death. A Dada Nerurimi writing task pairs tete and sekuru as the relatives a young person writes to when the parents object to a partner.
