Amainini, often shortened to mainini, is your mother's younger sister, and the same title is used for the wife of your father's younger brother.

Amainini is your mother's younger sister, a junior mother; her husband is babamunini, and the wife of your father's younger brother is called amainini too. A Shona dictionary lists further uses: a man's term for his wife's younger sister, a woman's term for the wife of her husband's younger brother, the name a husband's sisters and the older women give a newly married wife who has no child yet, and a junior wife in a polygamous home.

Because she stands so close to her sister, she could step into the mother's place: in chimutsamapfihwa a widower was given his late wife's younger sister, or one of her nieces, to marry and carry on her duties. A Dada Nerurimi letter exercise shows the closeness under strain, with children left in the care of 'mainini Chipo' while their mother works abroad complaining that she treats them as if they were not her own sister's children.

Could mainini marry her late sister's husband?

Yes, in the old custom of chimutsamapfihwa a widower could be given his late wife's younger sister, or one of her nieces, to marry and take up her duties in the family.
