Muzukuru means a grandchild, and also the child of your opposite-sex sibling: a man's sister's child or a woman's brother's child.

Muzukuru is the child of your child, and also the child of your hanzvadzi (opposite-sex sibling): a man's sister's children and a woman's brother's children. The term reaches further, so that a father's sister's child is also muzukuru, as the Yeukai notes on inheritance put it (muzukuru, mwana watete). Older people also call any child of a grandchild's age muzukuru.

The sister's son has set ritual work. At Shona rituals a muzukuru usually acts as master of ceremonies: at kurova guva he poured beer strainings on the grave, helped slaughter the goat and placed money on the head of the leading daughter-in-law in thanks for sweeping the grave, and a muzukuru went with the dead man's brothers and sons to consult a diviner. In nhaka a muzukuru could inherit the widow, though the children of that union took the dead man's family name. Between muzukuru and elders runs the chizukuru register, in which relatives give advice about life and correct each other openly.
