In English

The title given to a married woman by her husband's family, whose role is to bind two families together in kinship and who is both honoured and ritually teased through the custom of chiroora.

Muroora is the title given to a wife by the family into which she has married, including her husband's father and mother, his older and younger siblings, and his own sisters, who received bride wealth for giving her a husband. Grandmothers and grandfathers regard her as their own grandchild, while her husband's older and younger siblings treat her respectively as an aunt-by-marriage of senior or junior standing. The daughter-in-law's central duty is to bind together the family she married into and the family she came from, and to honour her new family by bearing children for it. As she settles into her new home, everyone who wishes to meet her formally greets and welcomes her, and at later ceremonies such as weddings, work parties, or funerals, her husband's siblings are permitted to tease and playfully insult her in public, a custom called chiroora. This teasing carries no ill will; the daughter-in-law is expected to take it in good humour, since it is simply the accepted way of building familiarity between newly joined relatives.
