In English

The husband of a family's daughter, who carries lasting duties of assistance and respect toward his wife's parents and relatives.

Mukuwasha (son-in-law) is the role a man takes on once he marries a family's daughter, and he is also regarded as a son-in-law by her siblings and grandparents. He is expected to help his wife's parents whenever they need assistance, whether in times of joy or hardship, and when visiting them he should not arrive empty-handed. A son-in-law is always the first to formally greet his parents-in-law whenever they meet, and custom required him to sweep the ashes at his in-laws' meeting place before taking his wife, once the marriage negotiations had begun. Within traditional life, a son-in-law was seen as an important part of the extended family, expected to help build houses, take the lead at threshing work parties, and take a central, organizing role at his in-laws' ceremonies and funerals.
