In English
N'angas were paid for their services. The initial token was called 'badza' (hoe), representing the request for a consultation. Patients would provide tobacco for the n'anga and elders to take as snuff. Some were given a chicken for ritual cleansing (like washing the mouth after treatment). The main payment (shano) was required once treatment was complete, whether or not the patient recovered, and could be a chicken, goat, cow, or other wealth.
