In English
A traditional healer, n'anga, may specialise in either healing or divination, or practise both. Diviners use divination sets carved from particular trees or from tortoise shell, bearing names such as nhokwara, kwami, chitokwadzima and chirume, which are cast on the ground and read according to how they fall to give an answer. One kind of healer inherits the calling within their clan, another receives it through a sudden, unexplained calling, another purchases the knowledge, and another receives it through possession by a guiding spirit. A healer helps explain the cause of an illness or a death, clarifying whether it stems from an offended ancestral spirit, witchcraft, or possession by a spirit, and also helps protect a person from being buried while still troubled by a harmful spirit. Healers are paid in stages, beginning with a token fee called badza simply so that they will agree to hear the case, with a larger payment following once the patient recovers, called shano, which might be a goat, a cow, or another valuable item.
