In English

In Shona belief, witches use the spirits of the dead and other agents to harm people, and witchcraft is often thought to run in families, typically passed on through women.

The Shona believe that certain people, most of them women, cause misfortune within families and communities through their knowledge of manipulating the spirits of the dead. They are said to travel by night riding hyenas, to disturb corpses, and to be able to ride other people as though they were horses. They are believed to harm or kill using charms, familiar birds, or poison, and some witches are thought to inherit witchcraft within their own clan, passed down through women of the family who are themselves unaware, until the spirit eventually reveals itself in them. Such a woman is said to be unable to refuse this inherited spirit, since refusing it is believed to bring about the death of her eldest son. To carry out her intentions, a witch is thought to act in secret, working against the family of someone she resents, and people take unusual happenings around a home as a sign that a witch may be present.
