MutupoMhlanga · zebra
Mhlanga is kept by the Mhlanga Dhuve clan, and its animal is the zebra. The National Archives, as quoted for Chipinge district, give Chief Mapungwana's people Dube as their totem and Mhlanga as their chidawo, and Dube, like Dhuve, is the zebra. Its poem greets the clan as Dhuve and as Mapanda, Muriwo, Bhasera, Mapfupfu and Chivara, names it shares with the Tembo poems.
The Mhlanga poem is a thanksgiving spoken to a father (babayo), a child of one's own bearing. It remembers hard days, the sun blazing, waiting by the road, mouths dry with hunger, and greets the clan at Mupamba, Zomba and Chirinda. Chivara and Zomba also appear in the Tembo Mazvimbakupa and Wakapiwa poems, and Dhuve, the name it greets the clan by, is the one the Wikipedia article on the Shona gives to men of the zebra group.
