In English
A king's death was kept concealed from the wider public until after burial, to prevent enemies from taking advantage of the moment to attack the kingdom. The body would have its internal organs removed before being laid to rest in a royal cave, propped upright together with the regalia he had used in life, and wrapped in cattle hide. The burial itself was carried out by designated attendants, though in some areas it was instead handled by the king's ritual friends or sons-in-law, together with his wives. The senior spirit medium was informed of the death, and the most senior elders would already have chosen a successor in consultation with that medium, with the new king being the one to break the deceased king's ceremonial staff at the burial. Only once burial was complete was the wider public told, many cattle were slaughtered, and a formal installation ceremony followed to install the new king with due honour.
