In English

There are many places across the land regarded as sacred because of their connection to the ancestral spirits and traditional religion, such as the Hurungwe mountains near Murehwa, the mountains of Nyanga, Gombe hill in Buhera, and pools said to be home to njuzu (water spirits) that never dry up even in the height of the dry season. Unusual events reported at these places are not easily explained, such as music and voices heard with no visible source, or people receiving food from an unnamed tree. Such occurrences are often thought to stem from the spirits of kings and other notable ancestors who died or were buried in these places. People are expected to be careful when at these sites, and if someone is taken by a njuzu or disappears there, relatives are not expected to mourn immediately but rather to consult the elders who look after that place about what should be done. Mocking or disrespecting these sites is regarded as inviting misfortune, so elders continue to teach the younger generation the particular rules that apply at each one.
