The detembo joins two animals. It greets the clan as Mbizi and Chiwara and as njuma yerenje, the hornless beast of the wilderness, and then as Tembo Shumba and Shumba Tembo, the zebra that is also a lion. It says the clan came from Marenje and owns Chirovarova (vene veChirovarova), and greets it at Gorongozi, Makarati, Marenje and Guruuswa.

It names the clan's people as Muroro, Musimira and Maruki, Chifambausiku, the one who travels by night, Muzungu and Mutakurwa, and calls the clan Mbizi yokwaChikanga, Chikanga's zebra, a trader in cloth (mushambadzi wamachira), naming Mutasa too. Some lines match the Mazvimbakupa poem, among them the zebra adorned as women adorn themselves. The longer version given here closes on Dehwerembidzi, Gakangoma and Samaita.

Those who carry a totem do not eat its animal. Some families keep away from one part of it only, such as the heart, and the old belief holds that a person who breaks the rule loses their teeth.

The praise names are for every day, not only for ceremonies: a person is greeted by them, thanked with them, and a wife praises her husband with his.

Mibvunzo.

Why is Tembo Samaita also called Shumba?

The detembo itself greets the clan as Tembo Shumba and Shumba Tembo, zebra and lion together, alongside Mbizi. It does not explain the pairing, and no other source here does.

What does Njuma yerenje mean?

The hornless beast of the wilderness. The Samaita detembo gives the zebra this name in its opening lines, and the Mazvimbakupa poem uses it too, beside njuma isina nyanga, the beast without horns.

Is Samaita a zebra praise name?

Yes. The Mitupo collection heads its zebra section Samaita and Mbizi, and its Mazvimbakupa poem closes on Zvimbakupa and Samaita. The men of this clan are greeted as Samaita as well.

Where is Tembo Shumba Samaita commonly found?

In Mutasa, though families carrying it live all over Zimbabwe and beyond.

Can two people of the Tembo totem marry?

Traditionally, people of the same mutupo and chidawo do not marry: they are counted as one family. Between different Tembo clans some families allow it, often after a ceremony that cuts the kinship (kucheka ukama).
