Nungu Hlatiwayo is a Shona clan of the Nungu totem, the porcupine. Its detembo greets the clan as Nungu, Matikiti, Chikandamuseye, Dekete, Mafuyateya and Gondemukande, and its women are greeted as Maphosa, the name the poem spells Maposa and gives to the whole clan.

The Hlatywayo detembo is a poem of thanks. Where most poems say Maita it says Tiyashire, Mwashuma and Tinobonga, and with them it greets the clan as Nungu, Matikiti, Chikandamuseye, Dekete, Mafuyateya, Gondemukande, Maposa and Gandirwana, at Serere Burauta and at Dimire.
It thanks the clan for seeing that people had grown thin (vantu vakatetepa), asks them to keep on giving (rambai muchitipazve), and says that this is why the speaker would stay with them for life (ndizvo zvinoita kuti tifire pano).
Those who carry a totem do not eat its animal. Some families keep away from one part of it only, such as the heart, and the old belief holds that a person who breaks the rule loses their teeth.
The praise names are for every day, not only for ceremonies: a person is greeted by them, thanked with them, and a wife praises her husband with his.

The detembo greets the clan as Nungu, Matikiti, Chikandamuseye, Dekete, Mafuyateya, Gondemukande, Maposa and Gandirwana. Women are greeted as Maphosa, which the poem spells Maposa.

Traditionally, people of the same mutupo and chidawo do not marry: they are counted as one family. Between different Nungu clans some families allow it, often after a ceremony that cuts the kinship (kucheka ukama).
