Mupamombe

Mupamombe Mutonga is the clan of the Ngezi and Mupawose chieftaincies, in Mhondoro-Ngezi and Chegutu. No source used here settles its animal: its detembo speaks only of cattle, and members of the clan give cattle, the lion and the tiger fish. Its men are greeted as Mutonga and Ngezi, and its women as Mupamombe.

Mutupo uyu.

The Mutonga detembo greets the clan as Mutonga, Mukoka and Ngezi, as those of Dumbura, and at Chivare, Chingondo and Chizarira. Its one story is about cattle: the clan opened up a beast with a fingernail (vakatumbura mombe nechara) where the knife had failed.

It calls them Siyakavhezha and owners of the forests (varidzi vamasango), and closes on Mupamombe and Mupawose, two names built on the verb kupa, to give: read word by word they are giver of cattle and giver to all.

Those who carry a totem do not eat its animal. Some families keep away from one part of it only, such as the heart, and the old belief holds that a person who breaks the rule loses their teeth.

The praise names are for every day, not only for ceremonies: a person is greeted by them, thanked with them, and a wife praises her husband with his.

Mibvunzo.

What animal is the Mupamombe totem?

No source settles it. The National Archives call the Mupawose family Batonga, with Mupamombe as their praise name, and name no animal. Members of the clan give cattle (nkomo), the lion and the tiger fish, and the detembo itself tells only of cattle. No source gives the buffalo.

Where is the Mupamombe Mutonga clan commonly found?

In Mhondoro-Ngezi, the old Ngezi chieftaincy, and in Chegutu, once Hartley district, where Chief Mupawose was recognised after the 1896 rising. A rival Chanakira house is in Seke.

What are the Mupamombe Mutonga praise names?

Men are greeted as Mutonga and Ngezi, and the detembo also calls the clan Mukoka, Siyakavhezha, Mupamombe and Mupawose. Women are greeted as Mupamombe.

What does Mupamombe mean?

The detembo does not explain it, but it pairs Mupamombe with Mupawose, and both are built on kupa, to give: read word by word they are giver of cattle and giver to all.

Where is Mupamombe Mutonga commonly found?

In Mhondoro-Ngezi and Chegutu, though families carrying it live all over Zimbabwe and beyond.

Can two people of the Mupamombe totem marry?

Traditionally, people of the same mutupo and chidawo do not marry: they are counted as one family. Between different Mupamombe clans some families allow it, often after a ceremony that cuts the kinship (kucheka ukama).
