Hwesa is the mouse totem. The Wikipedia article on the Shona gives Mbeva, Hwesa and Katerere as names of the mouse totem, and the Musoni poem greets its clan as mbeva and as Vaerambeva, those who keep away from the mouse. It is kept by the Hwesa Musoni clan.
The Musoni poem is short. It thanks the clan as mbeva, the mouse, and as Musoni, Warukore, Munhuwakure, Zungunde, Mutswandiani, Nyamunaka, VaRemba and VaMwenye, and calls its people those who do not sew with black thread and those who keep away from the mouse. The word musoni means a tailor, and the collection heads the poem Musoni Shinda, shinda being thread; none of the sources used here explains the thread.
The mouse (mbeva). The Wikipedia article on the Shona lists Mbeva, Hwesa and Katerere as names of the mouse totem, and the Musoni poem greets the clan as mbeva. Some lists give Hwesa as the civet cat; no source here supports that.
Why do the Musoni not sew with black thread?
Their poem calls them the people who do not sew with black thread. That is what the poem says; none of the sources used here gives the reason.
Which clans carry Hwesa?
Hwesa Musoni.
Can two people of the Hwesa totem marry?
Traditionally, people of the same mutupo and chidawo do not marry: they are counted as one family. Between different Hwesa clans some families allow it, often after a ceremony that cuts the kinship (kucheka ukama).
