Gushungo Tsiwo

Gushungo

Gushungo Tsiwo is the clan of the Zvimba people, whose mutupo is Ngonya and whose chidawo is Gushungo. Gushungo is not an animal: it is a totem taken from a part of the body, as Moyo is the heart. Its men are greeted as Gushungo, and its women as Tsiwo, Ngonya or Mangwenya.

The detembo greets the clan as Gushungo and Tsiwo, calls them the people of Nzungunhokotoko and the fruit of Negondo, and names them the owners of the land who came from Guruuswa. It calls them those of Zvimba, living at Chakona, and closes by thanking them as the child of Zvimba and as vaNgonya.

It also calls them the owners of the mazhanje trees (varidzi vamazhanje), and says they were the ones who opened up this land (vakapangura nyika ino).

Those who carry a totem do not eat its animal. Some families keep away from one part of it only, such as the heart, and the old belief holds that a person who breaks the rule loses their teeth.

The praise names are for every day, not only for ceremonies: a person is greeted by them, thanked with them, and a wife praises her husband with his.

Mibvunzo.

What does Gushungo mean?

Duramazwi reChiShona gives Gushungo as the chidawo of the Tsivo, who keep away from the female genitals (vanoera sikarudzi yomunhukadzi): a totem taken from a part of the body, as Moyo is the heart and Gumbo the leg. It is not an animal, and no source gives it as the fruit bat.

Where are the Gushungo people commonly found?

In Zvimba, in Mashonaland West. Stanlake Samkange's oral history of the Zvimba people (1986) gives their mutupo as Ngonya and their chidawo as Gushungo, in the land of Makonde and Chinhoyi, and the old Zvimba boundary took in Chegutu, Banket and Darwendale.

Was Robert Mugabe of the Gushungo totem?

Yes. He was born at Kutama in Zvimba, Samkange's history of the Zvimba names him among the Chidziva family of Matibini, and press reports speak of his Gushungo totem.

What are the Gushungo Tsiwo praise names?

Men are greeted as Gushungo, and women as Tsiwo, Ngonya or Mangwenya. The detembo also calls the clan vaNgonya, the fruit of Negondo and the child of Zvimba.

Where does the Gushungo detembo say the clan came from?

From Guruuswa. The poem calls the Gushungo the owners of the land who came from Guruuswa, and names them the people of Zvimba, living at Chakona.

Where is Gushungo Tsiwo commonly found?

In Zvimba, Makonde and Chegutu, though families carrying it live all over Zimbabwe and beyond.

Can two people of the Gushungo totem marry?

Traditionally, people of the same mutupo and chidawo do not marry: they are counted as one family. Between different Gushungo clans some families allow it, often after a ceremony that cuts the kinship (kucheka ukama).
