The detembo opens on Shayamombe and on Mandinginda, the fish in the pool (hove irimudziva), and thanks the clan as Dziva and Save. It greets them at Majenya and Nyaurungu, at Goto and Urambi, and by the Save, the great river, and it speaks of Mukota and of great stone houses (madzimbabwe makuru).

It tells of Nhobvu, who came from Dzokota keeping the Dziva totem, and gives thanks to those who are in the water (tatenda varimumvura). Its other names for the clan include Nyakuzvidzwa, Nhemahuru, Muzivikani, Mironga, Hunga, Dedza, Sambiri and Murambatsvina, and it closes on Marasamasa. Duramazwi reChiShona gives Sambiri as a chidawo of the Dziva people.

Those who carry a totem do not eat its animal. Some families keep away from one part of it only, such as the heart, and the old belief holds that a person who breaks the rule loses their teeth.

The praise names are for every day, not only for ceremonies: a person is greeted by them, thanked with them, and a wife praises her husband with his.

What is the Dziva totem?

The fish. Dziva means a pool, and the Shayamombe detembo says the Dziva is the fish (Dziva iri hove) and speaks of the fish in the pool. Duramazwi reChiShona defines Dziva as the totem of people who keep away from water or fish (vanoera mvura kana kuti hove).

Which river does the Dziva Shayamombe detembo name?

The Save. The poem greets the clan by the Save, the great river, and Save is also one of the names its men are greeted by.

What are the Dziva Shayamombe praise names?

Men are greeted as Save and Musaigwa, and women as Masiziba. The detembo also calls the clan Shayamombe, Mandinginda, Nyakuzvidzwa, Nhemahuru, Sambiri, Murambatsvina and Marasamasa.

Can two people of the Dziva totem marry?

Traditionally, people of the same mutupo and chidawo do not marry: they are counted as one family. Between different Dziva clans some families allow it, often after a ceremony that cuts the kinship (kucheka ukama).
