Chirombowe Nyati is a Shona clan of the Nyati totem, the buffalo, carried by the Shonga. Its men are greeted as Nyati, Shonga and Mhukahuru, and its women as MaNyati, Muzvare or Shonga. The detembo also calls the clan Zvigarambabvu, the child of Muswere.

The Nyati detembo thanks the clan as Nyati and Zvigarambabvu, Shonga and the child of Muswere, and greets them at Museso and Minanga, at Mhinha, Masendeke and Homwe, and in Ungwe. It links the clan with Makoni, calling out 'Makoni wangu mazamu eNyati'.
It is exact about food. The clan will not eat the meat of the back and prefers the chityu cut; they slaughter cattle and count eating a goat as poverty (kudya mbudzi urombo). It remembers Derere of Ungwe, who does not eat derere (okra), and says the ancestors are addressed with a basket of rice (kuteketera kuteketerwa nedengu romupunga).
Those who carry a totem do not eat its animal. Some families keep away from one part of it only, such as the heart, and the old belief holds that a person who breaks the rule loses their teeth.
The praise names are for every day, not only for ceremonies: a person is greeted by them, thanked with them, and a wife praises her husband with his.

Traditionally, people of the same mutupo and chidawo do not marry: they are counted as one family. Between different Chirombowe clans some families allow it, often after a ceremony that cuts the kinship (kucheka ukama).
